Seaton Tramway operates heritage trams in East Devon’s stunning Axe Valley. It runs alongside the River Axe estuary through the nature reserves. Giving an unrivalled view of the abundant bird life.
It runs from Seaton, a gateway town to the Jurassic Coast, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Through Colyford, stopping the traffic to cross the busy 3052 main coast road. Then you travel onwards to the historic town of Colyton which is described as “Devon’s Most Rebellious Town” for its part in the Monmouth Rebellion of 1685. Much more recently the laundry revolution!
Seaton Tramway History:
Following Beechings recommendations and the closure of many lines. Final permission was granted in December 1969 allowing Claude Lane and his assistant Allan Gardner to therefore open the tramway on the old stretch of railway between Seaton and Colyton. The transfer of the entire system was made in approximately 36 return lorry journeys between Eastbourne and Seaton.
The first tram to run a passenger service was on 28th August 1970. With no overhead wire, power was taken from a battery wagon towed by the tram. The line went as far as Bobsworth Bridge so named after the initial fare of one shilling. Operations ceased during September therefore to allow more equipment to be transported from Eastbourne in addition the overhead power came in shortly after. The final extension to Colyton got underway with an overnight session at Colyford level crossing in November 1975.
