Considering hiring a classic VW campervan? We have jotted down some thoughts to help you……………… Let us convince you!
Which age camper is for you?
Modern campervans and motorhomes can be like home from home, but the classics can have that real escapism quality. They have charm and retro appeal. Contrary to popular belief they are really not that tricky to drive. Most of our hirers get to grips with the different position and style of driving. Within a few miles they are embracing the change to have a chance to get away from the ‘everyday’. It’s about adjusting you’re driving stile and enjoying that slow pace of life.
Fuel economy
It’s frequently commented on that our classic campervans are actually good on fuel and don’t use as much as expected.
Reliability
Classic VW Campervans can receive bad press for breaking down. Whilst this can happen, we work hard to reduce the risk of break downs. As much as possible, we have returned our campervans back to standard in terms of ride height and mechanics. We find the closer they are to standard, the more reliable they become.
For peace of mind, we include full break down and recovery service as part of the rental package.
Size
The classic VW campervans are not much bigger than the average family SUV which means you can dive of the main roads, exploring all the meandering lanes and places a large motor home just can’t go. They may not have the parking sensors but being quite square in style, you will know where all the corners are!!
Inside the van
The size you need does however depend on your needs, if you’re a larger family make sure you have enough seat belts for the whole family. Most classics will have 4 belted seats and those with full width back seats will possibly have a 5th lap belt. Motorhomes and some larger campers have more space and home comforts such as showers and toilets but are more difficult to drive and maneuver particularly down small country lanes. A classic camper seats 4-5, sleeps 2 adults and 2 children comfortably and is just like driving a large family car. When renting a camper it’s best to travel light as fridge & cupboard space is obviously limited. But it’s a great excuse not to have to pack too much and also not to have a mammoth unpack and wash when you get home! The full width rock and roll beds are actually a similar size to most standard doubles, so you will get a good night’s sleep.
Safety
Whether modern or classic, it’s important to check that the campervan that you are hiring is safe and meets the required standards. If the campervan is fitted with any gas appliances then it will require a gas safety landlord certificate and the gas bottle should be stored on a suitable locker with drop vent to the outside. As an additional precaution we also have the electrical system tested and certified annually with all power leads and appliances being PAT tested.
Each of our campervans are fitted with smoke alarms, carbon monoxide alarms and fire extinguisher.
Although our campervans qualify as MOT exempt, we still have the annual MOT done prior to the beginning of each season.
Optional extra’s you might consider
Awning
An awning (ours are inflatable so easy peasy to set up) will give you that extra bit of space and if you have kids can give you an area to off load any extra’s you managed to pack! Ideal if you plan not to move around too much. An inner tent can also be provided should you wish to evict larger children into the awning!
Portable toilet
Most campsites have fantastic facilities these days, but this can be helpful for those late night or early mornings where you just don’t want to head out. Or useful if you have little people and may have an emergency.
Bike rack
A rack for 2 bikes can be added on request. So if you want to get in some exercise whilst exploring, why not take your bikes.
