Cross the border to Dorset
You’ll find Golden Cap, the only Natural World Heritage site in England, situated between Charmouth and Bridport. It is the highest sea cliff on the south coast and the views along the Jurassic Coast are stunning. You can scale the summit or take a gentler walk with a less demanding gradient but offering equally dramatic views around Stonebarrow.
Charmouth beach will always be one of our favourites. The dramatic Blue Lias Clay topped by the bright yellow Greensand of Golden Cap forms an iconic image. Boulders lay strewn at the base of the cliffs where frequent landslides and slips expose treasure for fossil hunters. Walk in the steps of Mary Anning of Lyme Regis, now remembered as one of the greatest fossil hunters, to unearth ammonites and belemnites. You might strike gold and discover an ichthyosaur as Mary did!
