Free Days Out – Holidaying in Devon in 2023? there are some amazing places to visit at no cost!

We have found a few gems that you can include on your travels.

Close to our base in East Devon one of the top places to visit is the Sidmouth Donkey Sanctuary. Completely free to visit and with superb facilities, lots of activities and beautiful walks. The large restaurant has stunning views across the fields.

Further along the coast is the city of Exeter, here you can find The Royal Albert Memorial Museum & Art Gallery. It holds significant and diverse collections in areas such as zoology, anthropology, fine art, local and overseas archaeology, and geology. Just across the hight street is Exeter Cathedral another imposing building, worth a visit.

Something a little more unusual is the combination of engineering and botanical drawing on the Veitch Lamp Post Trail in Exeter, down load a map and hunt out the 17 cast iron hand painted lamp posts.

Moving on from Exeter and heading down the A30 towards Plymouth is The House of Marbles. They produce quality vintage & traditional toys, games, gifts and books, but  there’s so much more shops, glassworks, restaurant, games garden & museums. They are dog friendly and best of all free to visit.

Rounding the coast further you come to the fishing town of Brixham. For the keen walkers you can walk the Southwest Coastal Path from Berry Head right round to The Brixham Battery. Passing through the town and harbour area there are a host of pubs cafes and fish and chip shops to sample from. For the egal eyed see if you can find the Banksy Squirrel! on your meanderings.

The bonus if you hire a VW campervan is that they are not much bigger than a normal family car and can fit in most normal car parking spaces. So getting off the beaten track can add to the holiday adventure.

Finishing our meanderings in Plymouth the Barbican and Mayflower Steps are worth a wander. The Mayflower Steps are where the Pilgrims are believed to have finally left England aboard the Mayflower, before crossing the Atlantic Ocean to settle in North America on 6 September 1620. The barbican is full of character and has so much to see.
